CULTURAL IMMERSION PROJECT PART 2 AND 3 PART 2 IS DUE SUNDAY AND PART
THREE THE FOLLOWING SUNDAY PART 1 WAS COMPLETED AND THE CULTURAL
THAT WAS CHOOSEN TO DISCUSS WAS PRISON
Group Encounter
You will attend and actively participate in 2 events related to your selected cultural group. These
events can be things such as church services, Bible/religious studies, community organization
meetings, volunteer work at homeless shelters, food kitchens, attendance at support group
meetings, fund-raising events, school-related meetings or activities, etc. The key is that these
events are sponsored by or provided for your particular cultural group.
I encourage you to pray before you attend these events. This is helpful for all immersion
experiences, especially if you are considering attending a religious service outside your faith.
You must spend a minimum of 4 hours total engaged in these 2 events or activities (i.e.,
approximately 2 hours per activity or event). If you attend another cultural group’s church
service, do not be surprised if the service is longer than you anticipated and if you are invited to
a meal afterwards. Anticipate that this might happen. It may insult some groups if you don’t eat
with them following the service. The entire event (church plus meal) counts as 1 activity.
With any activity, it is important that you interact with members of the cultural group to develop
an understanding of the event(s) and the motivations of the individuals in participating in them.
Consider some of these factors:

Purpose
Cultural
Religious
Social
Political
Economic
You will answer the questions below. You may use first person in your answers. While this is
not a regular academic paper (since it can answer questions in outline form and first person), you
must still use current APA format. The paper must have a correct title page, and you must use a
reference page.

Each question is accompanied by an estimated word count. The quality of your answer is more
important than the word count. You may expand further, but you do not have to do so. Do not
forget to put your name at the top of your answers! Here are the questions that you must answer:
1. What events did you attend? What happened? [at least 250 words]
2. How did your experience of actual cultural events compare with the expectations you had
developed from the readings and internet research you did in part 1? [at least 250 words]
3. How did participation in these events impact you emotionally? In other words, what was
it like to be a “minority” in this group? [at least 250 words]
4. As you consider your own cultural background, why do you think you responded in these
ways? [at least 250 words]
5. What are some key things you have learned about this culture through these experiences?
[at least 250 words]
This assignment is due by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Sunday of Module/Week 5.
Next, you will share some of your experience in the Cultural Immersion Project Part 2 Forum.
Remind your classmates of the culture you are exploring and discuss some of the interesting
things you experienced in your activities. Describe any emotional reactions you had and
challenges you anticipate for the final part of the project (part 3). Do not attach your paper.
Rather, share what you found interesting in your experience. You must respond to at least 2
classmates who explored a different culture.
Your thread (at least 350 words) is due by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Thursday of Module/Week 5 and
replies (at least 200 words each) by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Sunday of the same module/week.
*Note that the research you do for Parts 1 and 2 is necessary for the completion of Part 3.
Organize all the notes and references you have gathered thus far to enable you to easily
accomplish the final part of this project.

Part 3
Individual Encounter and Synthesis
You will conduct an in-depth, 1-hour interview with an individual or married couple from your
chosen cultural group in order to develop an understanding of the cultural factors that helped
shape the individual’s (or couple’s) cultural identity.
A variety of issues may be explored in the interview. Your knowledge gained from Parts 1 and 2,
as well as your sense of the person/couple you interview, will guide you in how personal you can
get with your questions. Cultural groups and individuals vary on how private they are. Use their
feedback regarding what areas you can probe. If the person is very open, ask more personal
questions. If not, then respect that cultural boundary and ask yourself why this boundary is there.
Issues that you may wish to explore during the interview include, but are not limited to, the
following:

Early childhood experiences and parental values
Earliest memories of recognizing membership in a culturally different group
The role of religion/spirituality
Immigration experiences
Similarities/differences between couples’ interactions in the U.S. compared to the
person’s original culture
School experiences as a member of a cultural minority
Experiences with subtle racism or discrimination
Experiences with overt racism or discrimination
Ways the person chose his/her career or makes career choices
The experience of being culturally different
Attitudes about the “majority” culture
Extent of desire to assimilate majority cultural attitudes, values, and lifestyles
Feelings of oppression
Feelings of anger toward majority culture
From the person’s own cultural background, are there any racist attitudes toward
or stereotyping of individuals from other particular cultures?
Strengths identified from the person’s cultural background that help him/her cope
with living in the U.S.
Once your interview is complete, you will answer the questions below. Do not forget to put your
name at the top of your answers. You may use first person in your answers. While this is not a
regular academic paper (since it can answer questions in outline form and first person), you will
still need to use current APA format. The paper must have a correct title page, and you must use
a reference page.

Each question is accompanied by an estimated word count. The quality of your answer is more
important than the word count. You may expand further, but you do not have to do so. Here are
the questions that you must answer:
1. Share some of the background of your interviewee (or couple). What was this
person’s/couple’s story? [at least 300 words]
2. How open was the interviewee/couple? Why do you think this was so? [at least
100 words]
3. What were some key cultural events (interactions with the majority culture,
experiences of prejudice, positive experiences with the majority culture, etc.) for
this person/couple? [at least 250 words]
4. What was your sense of this person’s acculturation level and racial/cultural
identity development? Why do you think this? [at least 200 words]
5. How did you respond emotionally towards the interviewee/couple during the
interview? Given what you know about your cultural background and other
aspects of your personal experience, why do you think you reacted this way? [250
words]
6. What did your interview with this person/couple add to your knowledge about this
cultural group that you did not get from parts 1 and 2? [200 words]
7. Remind yourself of the biblical worldview lens material considered in
Module/Week 1 (see the presentation titled “Interpreting Culture” in the
Module/Week 1 Reading & Study folder). What are some strengths or elements of
common grace that you see operating in this cultural group? How can we pray for
people in this cultural group? [200 words]
8. Which part of this immersion experience (parts 1, 2, or 3) was most helpful to you
in learning about this cultural group? Why do you think this was so? [100 words]
This assignment is due by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Sunday of Module/Week 7

Next, you will share some of your experience in the Cultural Immersion Project Part 3 Forum.
Remind the class of the culture you are exploring by putting its title in the subject line of your
thread (e.g. the Navajo tribe, Latinos, nursing home residents, etc.).
Share with the class what you found most interesting in studying this group. Do not attach your
final question answers. Rather, share the highlights and key things you took away from your
experience.
You must respond to at least 2 classmates. If someone else also examined the same cultural
group, you may respond to this person and compare/contrast experiences.
Your thread (at least 350 words) is due by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Thursday of Module/Week 7 and
replies (at least 200 words each) by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Sunday of the same module/week.
